Wolves 0 Walsall 1 (17.09.13)

The Super Saddlers edged this fiercely competitive ‘derby’ on a memorable night at Molineux. The home side went close with efforts from Bjorn Sigurdarson and Bakary Sako whilst Richard O’Donnell made a good save from a 30 yard free kick from the latter. Meanwhile Craig Westcarr’s free kick hit the bar after 9 minutes whilst Paul Downing saw a header deflected wide then saw a well struck volley go over the bar.

The winner came on 69 minutes from Andy Butler as a result of an Andy Taylor free kick that James Baxendale hooked over for the Walsall captain to head home to send the Walsall fans wild. Substitute Milan Lalkovic saw a curling shot in the final minute hit a post but it mattered not as Saddlers survived the 5 mins of time added on to record their 3rd famous victory at the Molineux in recent decades following the 1985-6 Milk Cup 1-0 victory and the 2-1 success in the league in 1999 – 2000.

Wolves supporters booed their team off and some sportingly applauded the Walsall players.

This win took Walsall up to 7th and dented Wolves home record of five straight wins.
